Community Cornerstone

from Supt. Dr. Tracy Smith

May 15, 2026
Dear NUSD Families and Community,

As we celebrate Staff Appreciation Month, it is the perfect time to recognize that our staff truly are the heart of our district. From the educators in our classrooms to the support teams working tirelessly behind the scenes, every individual plays a vital role in creating safe, nurturing, and inspiring environments where students can learn and thrive. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment help shape the future for every student we serve.

The impact of our staff extends far beyond their daily responsibilities. It is found in the mentorship they provide, the problems they solve, and the unwavering care they show every student who walks through their doors. Their passion and resilience keep our schools strong and our community connected.

Please join me in thanking all of our staff members for their hard work, heart, and commitment to excellence. Our district is a better place because of each and every one of them.

A special thank you as well to our amazing parent communities for the tremendous appreciation and support shown to staff throughout the month at school sites across the district.

With respect,
Dr. Tracy Smith
Superintendent

Chromebook Safety Measures and Online Content Filters

Our families trust our schools to provide students with a safe and secure digital learning environment, and we want to share information about the safeguards currently in place on district-issued Chromebooks and the steps we continuously take to strengthen those protections.

NUSD utilizes internet filtering, firewalls, monitoring tools, and content restrictions designed to block inappropriate websites, images, and search results while students are using district devices and networks. These systems are regularly updated and are intended to support safe and appropriate educational use of technology.

In addition to district-level filtering and security tools, teachers also have access to classroom management tools that allow them to monitor student Chromebook usage during instruction. These tools can also be used to create specific allow lists for directed learning activities, helping students stay focused on approved instructional resources.

However, as with all technology systems, there are occasional instances where inappropriate content, images, or search results may bypass filters despite these safeguards. While these situations are rare, we understand the concern they may cause and take them seriously.

Our Information Technology Department is actively working with our firewall and filtering vendors to further strengthen our systems and improve protections for students. This includes reviewing filtering settings, monitoring emerging online trends, and implementing additional safeguards where possible.

We also recognize that maintaining student online safety is a shared responsibility. We encourage families to continue having age-appropriate conversations with students about responsible technology use and to supervise device use at home whenever possible.

If a student encounters inappropriate content on a district device, we encourage them to immediately report it to a teacher, administrator, or parent so it can be addressed promptly.

Thank you for your partnership and continued support as we work to provide safe and effective learning environments for all students.

Brief Update on CAASPP Score Descriptors New This Year

The California Department of Education is updating the achievement level descriptions and labels used for state testing in English language arts, math, and science beginning with 2025–26 score reports. The new labels are designed to help families better understand student progress and avoid the misconception that one specific score level represents being “at grade level” or “below grade level.” The following table outlines the changes to the categorical labels for each reporting level:
Table comparing 'Old Reporting Label' and 'New Reporting Label' for levels 1-4.
The assessments, scoring criteria, and achievement levels themselves have not changed. Students are still being assessed on grade-level standards, and results can continue to be compared from year to year.

Congratulations to our Rotary Teachers of the Year!
